More About 1HoodMedia:
Founded in 2006, 1Hood begins as a collective of men from various disciplines, ideologies, and belief systems who banded together to address violence within and against our community. We have grown to an intergenerational, intersectional community committed to the same mission. 1Hood Media is a collective of socially conscious artists and activists who utilize art as a means of raising awareness about social justice matters affecting people around the world. We offer performance, written and visual art to connect communities and amplify messages. We provide workshops, curriculum consultation, media literacy training, conflict resolution, lyricism/songwriting, vocal instruction, music production, blogging, photography, and videography. Further, we offer consultation to artists seeking to establish a fruitful independent career and organizations who wish to establish a culture of equity and activism. In addition, 1Hood Media provides youth-based training in media literacy and the creation of media via 1Hood Media Academy. Focused on social justice and training arts entrepreneurs, the Academy provides a platform for artists to tell their own stories and provides avenues for young people to utilize their own gifts and talents to secure financial sustainability. Additionally, 1Hood Media also organizes and promotes educational and performance-based forums as a part of our programming.

Classroom Dialogue for Difficult Subjects

Host Organization: University of Pittsburgh - Center for Teaching and Learning

Classrooms, whether physical or virtual, are not impervious to the effects of larger societal forces such as racism, sexism, ableism, or other forms of violence. These topics may arise during class, even if they are not the focus of the lesson. Many instructors have felt unprepared to respond meaningfully to questions or comments about the impact and integral role of systemic conditions in students’ educational experiences. In this workshop, we will address how to deal with difficult subjects that may arise spontaneously during class. If you are unfamiliar with DEI concepts or would simply like a quick refresher, we recommend participating in or watching the recording of the “Fundamentals of Teaching Inclusively” workshop, as we will build upon foundational knowledge offered there. Participants are invited to bring a sample syllabus, lesson plan, or assignment description.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Describe the value of student voices as part of your teaching
Identify current and future strategies to welcome student voices as part of instructional activities (readings, lecturing, assignments)
Recognize yourself in your role of a dialogue facilitator
SEATING IS LIMITED.

‘Hear Me Out’ Dialogue Series: Grief and End-of-Life Care

Host Organization: partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia, Northland Public Library, the Coy Public Library of Shippensburg and the Cleve J. Fredricksen Library, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

With the constant uptick of global death counts due to COVID-19, grief may feel like an ever-present emotion, not only for those lost but also for lost time and opportunity. For many of us, grief can pool together from multiple sources—whether that be racial inequity, the climate crisis, financial insecurity, or any number of difficulties that we individually and collectively navigate. In this two-hour session, we will partner with Pennsylvanian grief counselors and end-of-life practitioners. Our goal is to hold space for lived experiences of grief, our body’s reactions to grief, our cultural relationship to death, and how to navigate grief collectively.

Fadi Kattan's Matbakh: Heritage, Terroir, and National Identity

Host Organization: Carnegie Mellon Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Fadi Kattan, franco-Palestinian chef and hotelier, has become the voice of modern Palestinian cuisine. When Fadi started his Fawda Restaurant in 2016, he created a cuisine honouring Palestine’s best produce with a modern twist, raising to the challenge of rendering this traditional kitchen into a gourmet dining experience. From a Bethlehemite family that has on the maternal side cultivated a francophone culture and on the paternal side, a British culture with passages in India, Japan and the Sudan, Fadi’s cuisine and savoir-faire combine worldly influences, a desire for perfection and a passion for the local terroir. After completing his hotel management studies at the Institut Vatel and working in Paris and London, Fadi came back to Palestine to join the family business. After 15 years, influenced by the ever-changing situation in Palestine, Fadi decided to go back to his passion, the kitchen.

The event will be moderated by Michal Friedman and Nevine Abraham.
